Michael Chekhov Acting Technique
A feature of Artistic Director Jo-anne Sarre's approach to theatre-making is the incorporation of the Michael Chekhov acting technique. Jo-anne has worked with practitioners in this method from across the globe - Mechthild Harkness (Aus), Joanna Merlin, Ted Hughes & Fern Sloan (MICHA, USA), Sarah Kane (Michael Chekhov Studio, London) and Jobst Langhans (Michael Tscheckov Studio, Berlin). This method takes the imagination as a starting point, bringing creative freedom to the performer who wishes to develop his/her acting artistry. ARTS FOR TRANSFORMATION
Engagement in artistic expression stimulates transformation and growth of the individual, which in turn enriches family life and community.
PROMOTING
We promote holistic and sustainable living practice which includes engagement in the Arts, engendering respect for others and the environment. As such we promote social inclusion.
We believe that participation in the Arts is a necessity for the well-being of the community. Engagement in the Arts enlivens, and by so doing Ink Pot promotes Arts for Life. We also see engagement in the Arts as a life-long journey.
OUR VISION
Ink Pot Arts is dedicated to providing relevant, high quality arts experiences for all ages. We aim to foster creativity, enhance well-being and develop a sense of community whilst enriching the cultural life of the Adelaide Hills.
We strive to
- Encompass excellence and innovation in arts practice
- Establish a base of artistic expertise and arts collaborators
- Create a vibrant and inspiring Arts Centre which will be recognised as a regional resource
- Identify needs within the community and provide meaningful projects which address those needs
In early 2004 a group of parents, artists and friends gathered together to create a vision for a community arts initiative in the Adelaide Hills. What unfolded in the ensuing months was the desire to create an Arts Centre which brought together professionals and members of the public to work on artistic projects which have meaning for the community, and Ink Pot Arts Inc was born. Growth and transformation of the individual through arts engagement is at the centre of the vision, based on a holistic philosophy. There has been a focus on arts practice to foster creativity, enhance wellbeing and to develop a sense of community. With this in mind, our programme has offered festival days as well as workshops and performance projects.
Since our beginning over 600 children, teenagers and adults have taken part in workshops and productions. We promote local artists and specialise in creating original works across a variety of genres.
Our tutors have both teaching and performance experience, thus being able to provide expert guidance for all involved. Workshops have been offered in movement, clowning, circus, singing, drama, dance, physical theatre, storytelling, audition preparation and improvisation. Performance projects have ranged from street theatre performances, opera, and intimate devised theatre pieces to large scale in-theatre productions. The Gathering Wave, our all-comers choir, sings regularly at community events. In 2009, collaboration with Tutti Ensemble culminated in a Christmas Concert attended by about 500 people.
The founding Artistic Director Jo-anne Sarre has a Creative Speech and Drama Diploma (from The Harkness Studio, Sydney), is a qualified teacher and has just recently completed her BA Honours (Drama) at Flinders University. She has worked across Australia, New Zealand, the UK, Europe, China, India and the US as an actor, storyteller, director and workshop facilitator.
